Search Dutch Golden Age worksIn the 17th century, the Dutch Republic produced one of the most remarkable concentrations of artistic talent in history. Freed from the demands of church patronage by the Protestant Reformation, Dutch painters turned to the world around them — merchant interiors lit by window light, the faces of their neighbours, flat landscapes under vast skies. The NGA holds exceptional examples of this tradition, from Rembrandt's 373 works spanning portraiture, Biblical narrative, and printmaking, to Vermeer's three luminous panels, each a meditation on light and silence.
