Search Impressionism worksWhen a group of French painters began exhibiting outside the official Salon in 1874, they were mocked for their unfinished-looking canvases. Within decades, Impressionism had redefined what painting could do. The NGA's collection spans the full range of the movement — Monet's serial studies of water and atmosphere, Degas's radical compositions of dancers and cafés, Cassatt's intimate scenes of women and children, and Pissarro's bustling street scenes. Together they form one of the strongest Impressionist holdings in North America.
