Terms of Service

1. The service

Retrievals is a free semantic search engine for the National Gallery of Art's open-access collection. There is no account, no subscription, and no charge. By using the service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.

2. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the service for anything unlawful
• scrape or bulk-request the site in a way that disrupts it for others
• try to bypass rate limits, security controls, or the API's authentication layer
• misrepresent search results as official output of the National Gallery of Art
• resell the service or its results

3. Intellectual property

The site's own design, text, and code are owned by Retrievals. Artwork images and metadata come from the NGA's public-domain open-access dataset (CC0) and remain governed by its terms. Retrievals is not affiliated with the National Gallery of Art.

4. No warranties

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind. Search is best-effort: results may be incomplete, incorrect, or change as the index evolves. We do not guarantee that the service will be available or error-free.

5. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Retrievals will not be liable for any damages arising from your use of the service.

6. Termination

We may restrict or suspend access to the service at any time, with or without notice.

7. Changes

We may update these Terms. Changes take effect when posted, and the “Last updated” date is revised.

8. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the operator of Retrievals is established.
